About Abbey Farm

Why we farm organically

All produce supplied by Abbey Farm Organics is certified organic. We also distribute Abbey Farm Wild Bird Food which is non-organic.

Organic vegetables and salads

During the year, we expect to grow about 60% of the vegetables and salads we use at Abbey Farm. This percentage will be higher in the summer and early autumn, when we expect to be self-sufficient, but lower in the spring when only a small range of vegetables grow well in this region. Most of the vegetables we buy in come from a nearby farm (Donald Morton's at Bagthorpe, near Bircham, Norfolk) or other local growers. The majority of the rest comes from certified organic growers from the Continent. It is very rare for us to source vegetables from outside Europe.

Organic fruit

We have our own strawberry, rhubarb, gooseberry, raspberry, blackcurrant and redcurrant. We buy in other fruit as locally as possible, so purchase apples, pears and plums from East Anglian growers when available. Most other fruit comes from the Continent, particularly Italy, Netherlands, Spain and France. Our wholesaler supplies us with fair trade bananas from Dominican Republic or Peru.

Organic mushrooms and eggs

Our mushrooms come from Cambridgeshire and our eggs are from Fakenham, Norfolk. The eggs are free range and certified by the Soil Association

Concerned about food miles and the origin of your produce?

Our box scheme allows you to choose to exclude all imports from your delivery. At certain times of the year, in particular March-June, this would noticeably reduce the variety in a vegetable box.

You can also choose to exclude imports except for the staples (potatoes, carrots and onions). This means you will still get these three vegetables during the short period of the year when they are only available as imports. Our recent experience has been that the period during which we have to import these products is getting shorter.

We are happy to discuss any concerns you have about the origin of produce we use.
